Short answer: sooner than you think. Long answer: keep reading.
Congratulations, you’re engaged! You’ve probably been staring at your left hand a lot lately (who can blame you?!) and the celebratory texts have been flowing. But once the excitement settles just a tiny bit, the next big question usually hits: When should we book our wedding venue?
If you're planning to get married near the Omaha or Council Bluffs area, here's the honest truth: your venue is one of the very first things you should lock in. Here’s why timing is everything - and how to know when to say “I do” to your dream location.

Why the Venue Comes First
In the wedding world, dates are like prime real estate, especially for vendors who can only host one event per day (like us venues, photographers, and planners). That means once a date is gone, it’s gone. And in a popular area like Omaha, where gorgeous barns and rustic settings are in high demand, dates can book out 12–18 months in advance, particularly for Saturdays in spring and fall.
That’s why we always say: book the venue first, then build everything else around it.
So... How Soon Is Too Soon?
We’d argue there’s no such thing as too soon. Many of our couples reach out to us within weeks of getting engaged and some even tour venues before they’re officially engaged (hey, no judgment here!).
If you have a specific season or date in mind, the sooner you reach out, the better your chances of getting it.
Let’s break it down:
Timeframe | What’s Likely Available? | Your Planning Vibe |
18–24 months out | Almost any date! | You’re chill, have lots of time to plan, and you love options. |
12–18 months out | Most Saturdays still open (for now) | Ideal for spring and fall weddings in Omaha—book now or risk missing out. |
9–12 months out | Dates are going fast | It’s go-time! You’ll need to move quickly and be flexible. |
6 months or less | Weekdays or off-season weekends | You might score a hidden gem or luck out on a cancellation, but you'll need to act fast and get creative. |
Popular Wedding Seasons in Omaha
Let’s be honest—Omaha weather can be... well, unpredictable. But there are definitely peak seasons that fill up fast.
Spring (April–June) Everyone’s excited to shake off winter, flowers are blooming, and it’s not too hot yet. These weekends get snatched up quickly.
Fall (September–October) Golden trees, cozy vibes, and ideal temps? Yes, please. Fall weddings in Nebraska and Iowa are chef’s kiss - which means venues book up fast and early.
Summer (July–August) Long days, big skies, and plenty of flowers in bloom are beautiful, but it can get hot. If you don’t mind the heat or have an indoor ceremony space, summer can be a solid option.
Winter (November–March) More venue availability and lower pricing. If you’re dreaming of moody candlelight and cozy fireplaces, don’t overlook a winter wedding. But be aware that some venues (like us) shut down during the winter months.
What If You Don’t Have a Date in Mind?
That’s okay! And actually, it can work in your favor!
If your heart is set on a certain venue, we always suggest touring first and seeing what dates they have available. You may fall in love with a space and happily build your date around what they have open. Flexibility = more options, less stress.
At Willow Creek, for example (that’s us!), we’ve helped countless couples choose their date after they tour. Sometimes that “feels right” date just hits you when you’re standing under the twinkle lights or picturing your first dance under the open sky.
Other Benefits of Booking Early
Peace of Mind Once your venue is secured, it’s like the whole vision can fall into place. You know your date, your location, your vibe - and suddenly Pinterest boards feel a little more productive.
Your Dream Team Many of the most in-demand vendors (photographers, DJs, caterers, etc.) also book out a year or more in advance. Having your venue and date in place means you can start reaching out and locking in your A-team.
Budget Planning Your venue is likely one of the biggest pieces of your wedding budget. Knowing that number early helps you realistically plan the rest of your expenses without panic-buying 72 hand-stamped linen napkins (we’ve all been there!).
What If You’re Planning a Short Engagement?
No worries! Not every couple wants (or needs) a long engagement. We’ve had couples plan beautiful weddings in 3–6 months, especially if they’re open to Fridays, Sundays or even a weekday. The key is to be flexible and decisive. Tour quickly, book fast, and trust your gut.
Tips for Booking Your Wedding Venue Around Omaha
Make a list of your must-haves. Do you want an indoor/outdoor combo? Onsite lodging? A rustic barn? Know what matters most before you tour.
Ask about what's included. Some venues (like us!) offer tables, chairs, décor, even weekend access and others may be more DIY.
Don’t ghost your favorites. If you loved a venue, don’t wait too long to book. That perfect Saturday in September won’t be open forever.
Consider a weekday or Sunday. Friday and Sunday weddings are growing in popularity for a reason - more date availability and often a cost savings.
Book a tour early. Even if you're still browsing, there’s nothing like seeing a place in person. It makes everything more real.
Final Thoughts
There’s no “perfect” timeline to book your wedding venue, but if you want the most options and the least stress, booking early is your best bet. Whether you’re newly engaged or already knee-deep in planning spreadsheets, don’t wait too long to start looking at venues near Omaha.
And hey, if you’re still searching for the one, we’d love to show you around Willow Creek. We’ve been hosting weddings for over 20 years (and collecting an impressive amount of koozies along the way!), and nothing makes us happier than helping couples celebrate their forever.
